FABULOUS Christmas Dinner Menu ideas

Most Southerners (and those around the world) I know create a Christmas dinner menu similar to their Thanksgiving Day spread, but we don’t do that anymore.  By the time Christmas dinner rolls around, we’re tired of turkey and the trimmings!  I’m excited to share our Christmas dinner menu ideas to help you jazz up your gathering too with new excitement and several new recipes to try!

But wait!

I’m a traditionalist when it comes to the holidays, but I’ve tried to go with the flow when my people wanted to try new things for our Christmas dinner menu a few years ago.  We even had steamed oysters for several years in a row with lots of appetizer-type foods, but a serious food allergy made us follow a simple food allergy diet to be careful.

Now we’ve settled into a great compromise of simple foods that are mouth-watering but a little simpler and lighter (except for all the dessert). Here’s what we’ve had the past couple years and what I’m planning for this year also:

Christmas dinner menu

  • smoked roast
  • green beans
  • jalapeno & bacon deviled eggs
  • mashed potatoes
  • pound cake or red velvet cake
  • cheesecake
  • fudge

The recipe and hints are below!  Lots of desserts — that’s how we roll around here for the holidays.  It’s what the family wants, and by golly, it’s what they will get!  I LOVE Christmas so much!

Smoked roast

Superman is planning on rubbing his secret seasonings on a beef or pork loin roast and throwing it on our smoker bright and early on Christmas morning.  I know, he’s a keeper.  By taking care of the main meat, he sure takes a lot of pressure off of me.  This isn’t much of a recipe … I’m not much help on this one.

Not to brag, but he’s also famous for his Christmas morning breakfast casserole (that he puts together the night before and sticks in the fridge for me).  I’m spoiled, I know.  Maybe I’ll convince him to share his amazing breakfast casserole recipe with us on Christmas morn!

Green bean casserole

I decided to mix up the green bean casserole for Thanksgiving this year and it was a big hit with the hubs. He requested them for Christmas day.  It’s similar to the traditional green bean casserole that everyone makes but Y’all, I just can’t stomach the canned cream of chicken anymore.  It’s just so gross coming out of the can in a big blob (sorry, that’s just me).

This is all that I did:

I cooked my green bean recipe and added them to the casserole dish, made my homemade cream of whatever soup and stirred it into the dish, placed it in a 350-degree oven for twenty-five minutes and then put those French’s fried onions on top for five minutes.

Jalapeno & Bacon Deviled eggs

I’ll make twelve hard-boiled eggs and to the egg yolks, I’ll add about a 1/2 cup mayo, tablespoon mustard, dash of salt and pepper, and a tablespoon of chopped jalapenos.  I’ll crumble up cooked bacon and place about three tiny pieces on the top of each prepared deviled egg.  Nothing fancy!

Buttery mashed potatoes

We’ll boil some cut up potatoes for about twenty minutes, drain the water, mash the potatoes a bit (leaving a few chunky), and then add milk, butter, and salt and pepper to taste.

Desserts times three

My pound cake and 5-minute fudge were requested for the Christmas dinner menu as well as my 7-minute cheesecake.  Maybe I can share my simple cheesecake with you soon!

Not a complicated meal at all.  Now let me go try to get some rest since all Captain and E will arrive tomorrow.  Eppp!  I love the holidays.  What about you?

This year we are keeping it easy with steak and sides. It’s going to be a little warm in Charlotte, NC, so we love the idea of spending some time outside!

We are doing lobster pot pies this Christmas, I wanted to do something different than what we had for Thanksgiving.
Even on Thanksgiving I made cornish hens instead of a turkey.

I have ZERO CLUE what Christmas will be like this year, and that includes food. We are not doing the typical thing…… And we are staying with my husand’s relatives, so whoooo knows, but I am just there to go with the flow!
