The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort made sure that my daughter and I created unforgettable memories recently on a last minute travel trip.  There are many reasons to book a stay at a legendary Oceanfront destination such as this, and the following are just five highlights from our stay …..

Last Minute Travel

When I found out that my daughter and I would be home alone on a certain January weekend, my Mom brain started thinking, “What’s something fun but different that my teen and I could do together?” Then it hit me:  A road trip to a luxurious, Coastal resort, of course!  That way, Mom would feel secure and daughter would feel pampered and special.  Yes, please.

Oceanfront Villas

On arriving at our last minute travel destination, the first order of business was to check out the two-bedroom, oceanfront beach villa that awaited us.  I was delighted to find out that our villa had gated parking with a designated parking space.  Also, instead of walking into a typical hotel room where the bed is front-and-center, we walked into a dreamy living room with a balcony and a view to die for.

Nothing typical about this villa, honey.

The two Beach Villa buildings (north and south of the main building) each offer a private pool and hot tub, gas grills, and gated parking. All that a family would need for a laid-back vacation are tucked into this home away from home.  It’s all been thought of – so Mom doesn’t have to.

  • Master bedroom with king bed and full bath
  • Second bedroom with either one queen bed or two twin beds and full bath
  • Living and dining room combination
  • Walk out patio or a balcony
  • Fully-equipped kitchens with full-size refrigerator, stove/oven, complete silverware, dinnerware, glassware, cooking utensils, cookery set, a microwave oven, blender, and coffee maker.
  • Washer/dryer
  • Two bedroom, two bath Villas measure 1210 square feet

Did you catch that?  Princess and I each had our own bedroom and our own bathroom.  The master bedroom also had a remarkable walk-in closet and balcony as well.  The total space was well over 1200 square feet.

Perfect Views

It must have been the way the spacious villas were constructed, but we could not see or hear our neighbors above, below, or beside us.  We felt as if we were the only two people on a private island as long as we were in our villa.  The sound of the waves were so incredibly close that it seemed as if we could reach out and touch them.  For this reason, our balcony doors stayed open for practically our entire visit.

Each morning I woke up early to enjoy quiet moments on the balcony – just me, my coffee, and the sound of the crashing waves and shorebirds.  On the beach, couples walked by hand-in-hand and kids laughed and played at a distance.  Each morning I could be found in awe of the glorious natural beauty.

Southern Food on-site

One of the best features for last minute travel at The King and Prince Resort is ECHO Restaurant which is found on the far side of the main lobby in the Historic building.  ECHO captured our hearts with a name that pays homage to St. Simon’s WWII naval history and the use of radar.  It didn’t hurt that indoor and outdoor Oceanfront dining captured a gorgeous view of the sea from every dining seat.

Sadly, we couldn’t partake in the fresh, coastal cuisine that ECHO is famous for due to seafood allergies, but our waiter and cook went far and beyond to accommodate us with wonderful alternatives like Prime Rib, a local cheese sampler, and (to my girl’s delight) … the best macaroni and cheese she’s ever tasted!  But the dessert – oh the awesome cheesecake brownie.

This Southern Mama was blown away by the bed and breakfast plate that we ordered that came with scrambled eggs, a small fruit cup, (bacon, sausage, or ham), (grits or potatoes), (toast or biscuit), (juice or milk), and coffee.  Delicious and hearty.  Whether you want to chill at the resort the entire weekend and have the most incredible food catered to you or eat your meals on the run, ECHO St. Simons has you covered.

Tucked away

Perfectly positioned to take advantage of the serene atmosphere, the King and Prince is as close as a bike ride to the Pier Village when it’s time to explore.  There’s a surf shop with bike rentals right around the corner and the Welcome Center and St. Simons Lighthouse are a mile down the road.  St. Simons is only about twelve miles long and three miles wide so almost everything is within close proximity to the resort.

I loved the fact that St. Simons is compact enough that many family activities are practically at the resort doorstep.  Scooting around the island by car or bike as a family is fun and its hard to miss the Southern hospitality and relaxed charm of this tropical paradise.

Fun Island Activities

After an overview of a new city on the best tour available, families can decide which attractions to revisit and focus their time.  With this in mind, we boarded the Colonial Trolley Tours Saturday morning with the engaging and friendly Captain Rod.  His entertaining style of presenting historical knowledge of Coastal Georgia was absolutely fascinating and the hour and a half tour flew by.  There was never a dull moment!

Iconic stops such as Christ Church, Fort Frederica, Wesley Gardens, Avenue of the Oaks, and the mermaid tree carving were top on the list.  The cold wind didn’t spoil our tour because of the complete enclosure of the trolley (he says that comes in handy during summer months to keep the air conditioning in as well).

We walked through the gift shop and watched a history film at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum before ascending 129 steps of the cast iron spiral staircase steps to the panoramic view from the top.  The adjacent keeper’s house was especially interesting with each room frozen in time in the original home decor.  Legend claims that after the murder of the head lighthouse keeper by his assistant in 1880, his footsteps could be heard in the tower by the wives of later keepers (I read about this spook story on my own).

Filled with unique shops and restaurants with a true Southern beach town vibe, the Pier Village is fun to visit after a day of exploring the island.  Don’t miss Neptune Park Fun Zone that boasts Oceanside miniature golf, pools, playground, concession stand, tables, umbrellas, and benches.

Our last minute travel trip that was full of laughter, talking, food, sightseeing, and shopping is affectionately know around my house as King and Prince Weekend.  I can’t recommend The King and Prince Beach & Golf resort enough for a parent-child getaway or complete family vacation.  You’ll marvel at your stay in tropical paradise without a passport!

I love St. Simon’s, we live just an hour north of there near enough to Savannah but try to get to the beach at weekends whenever we can before it gets way too hot. We’re always threatening to go for a weekend but never have – now I’m seriously going to look into it 🙂

Thanks Amy for your input! We are in Georgia too and have always been curious about The King and Prince Resort AND exploring St. Simons but never have. We are in love now and I feel guilty that we’ve neglected it so long. It’s truly a hidden treasure!

I know, right, Moriah?! I had no idea that this gem had been hidden here all of this time. If you study early Georgia history, you’ll read over and over again how the wealthy sought out this area because of it’s sub-tropic, perfect weather and seclusion. LOVE it! Thanks for your thoughts.

This place looks beautiful and so relaxing! Whenever we travel with our girls we try to find places with two bedrooms so everyone is comfortable. This would be perfect for our entire family or just a couple get away.
