Finding a vacation rental that meets the needs of the family is nerve-racking, right? While looking for Jekyll Island rentals for our family trip recently, it was no different. I didn’t ask for much – a clean place with plenty of beds that was well-stocked to fit our needs so we didn’t have to pack up our house and the kitchen sink. Oh, and there couldn’t be any mention of bugs ever being seen in the rental (nope!). I was so thrilled about the rental house gem that we discovered because it was huge and clean and went way beyond our expectations. I thought you might like info about it AND the things our family found to do in Jekyll Island Georgia.
I hope you find these family vacation ideas and Jekyll Island travel guide helpful to start planning your next trip! Don’t miss the house rental video, the important links and extra info near the end!
A Family Getaway
We love family trips to the beach even when it’s not “beach weather.” There’s something so calming and peaceful about a stroll along a southern beach without anyone else in sight. And a bike ride around an island when the only other visitors are a few residents and a fair amount of snowbirds escaping their harsh northern winters back home.
I was on assignment during this trip, writing a piece about the best islands to visit in the U.S. – without the worry of a passport. Our Jekyll Island rentals search was a huge success because this wonderful home allows parents to have a separate “wing” of the home to themselves. I was able to work and write in solitude when I needed to.
The other specific details that I loved about this home and the list of things that we did as a family are below, but first, here are FAQS for the travel-planning women out there!
Jekyll Island Faqs
Absolutely. I’m saving you a ton of time by sharing this particular home rental with you. It’s huge, sleeps 10, and had everything we needed!
The entire island is completely safe in my opinion. There is only one (older) chain hotel on the island that appears a little run down that I wouldn’t care to try.
There are so many things to do here! I will share all of the fun family activities that we did on this trip. I have several articles on this site about this Golden Isles area as well.
The mainland of Brunswick, Georgia is the home of Golden Isles Airport (BQK) with flights by Delta from Atlanta, Georgia and is just a 30-minute drive. It is also an option to fly into Savannah, Georgia (SAV) or Jacksonville, Florida (JAX), which are both a 60-minute drive.
Just next door is St. Simons Island which is a slightly larger isle with plenty of shops, restaurants, and history to keep you very busy. Going to be around for a while? You won’t believe these 7 vacation spots in Georgia that you could choose from as well!
What we loved about this house rental
As you’ll see in the video of this lovely home, Anchored Blessings, below, it was huge! There is room for 10 people with its three bedrooms and three bathrooms. There are six beds in this place! Each bedroom has its own bath and one suite is one the other end of the ranch home from the others. My youngest chose that end and almost felt as if she was in her own place. We would meet in the kitchen in the mornings which was in the center of the home.
Not only is there a neat kitchen in the center, there is a living room on each side of it. You heard me right (that’s why you have to watch the video to understand the layout), two living rooms and enough TVs in every space to keep everyone happy!
The bathrooms and kitchen were stocked with many thoughtful extras like a Keurig and coffee pods, toiletries to get you started, and every kind of cookware you could dream up.
My favorite part of the home (after my joy about its humongous size) was the decor of what I call inspirational Coastal Farmhouse. It was just lovely. The owners have a large-ish family and grandkids of their own. Staying here makes you feel completely welcome like you are a part of their fam too!
Trust me when I tell you that this home was a one-of-a-kind among the other Jekyll Island rentals!
Jekyll Family Fun
We beachcombed in the mild weather, walked through the historic district, bicycled to the beach (many complimentary bikes at the rental), visited the Jekyll Island Museum, and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
One of the nights was my birthday and we splurged for dinner at The Westin’s Reserve Restaurant. A couple of our other meals were at Tortuga Jacks, Driftwood Bistro, and Red Bug Motors Pizza.
Going to the Beach Village at Beachtown on the island for a few groceries, restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shopping never gets old. You’ll almost run right into it when you keep driving straight after you enter on the causeway. We spent lots of time at Jekyll Market, Tonya’s Treasures, Wee Pub Beach, and more.
There are so many family friendly things to do that we could have stayed for another week and may not have covered it all!
