Have this meal ready in 25 minutes by using pre-cooked or leftover ground meat, potatoes, and vegetables of your choosing. Traditionally, a healthy shepherd’s pie recipe will have English peas and sometimes carrots too. As a side note, my crew doesn’t really care for carrots or peas but this shepherd’s pie is so good that they don’t complain!
I’ve tried making a healthy shepherd’s pie recipe from Superman’s childhood before but it was a tad dry. I’m part Irish, so I researched the original Shepherd’s pie recipe and it’s made with lamb?! No thank you!
Hallelu – I discovered a secret ingredient that will make your family love this meal so much that you can’t keep them out of it – Sour Cream!
Healthy shepherd’s pie recipe ingredients
The ingredients, How-to video, and a printable recipe card are below but here’s the basic idea ->>> You will simply add sour cream and veggies to cooked ground meat, add mashed potatoes and cheese to the top and bake. That’s it.
- 1 pound ground meat
- 2 Tablespoons sour cream
- 1 cup or less cooked veggies
- 2 cups mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup or more shredded cheese
- salt, pepper, garlic powder
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a skillet with cooked, drained, and seasoned ground meat, add sour cream and stir.
- Pour veggies into the skillet gently as to not mash them and cook on medium until warm.
- Layer warm and creamy mashed potatoes over top of meat mixture.
- Top with as little or as much shredded cheese as you like.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
Below is a quick video to show you just how quick and easy this healthy shepherd’s pie recipe really is:
Healthy Shepherd’s Pie recipe variations
The healthiest way to create healthy shepherd’s pie recipe is to use ground turkey or venison, mashed red potatoes, healthy veggies, and limit the cheese. The quickest way to throw this dish together is use leftover meat, mashed potatoes, and veggies or pre-cooked ground meat, instant potatoes, and microwave veggies. The second version is what I did just last week and the best shepherd’s pie recipe in the history of recipes was on the table in 25 minutes.
Cooked bacon bits on top would send your family’s taste buds to the moon and back – just saying. I’m Southern – it’s what we do.

Shepherd’s Pie (I don’t use lamb, so it is cottage pie) is my brother’s favorite meal. This is very similar to my recipe, except for the sour cream. I’ll have to try adding that. I do the extra cheat by using the refrigerated, packaged potatoes. You can’t beat this for a quick, satisfying meal.
Mmm, this shepherd’s pie looks delicious! I haven’t ate this in years. I might have to change that now!
