Printable Christmas Gift List: How To Finally Keep Track Of It All This Year

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a printable Christmas gift list to simply organize the Christmas gift ideas already bought, know who they were for, and what else needs to be bought?  At this point in the holiday season, I need a place to write Christmas gift ideas and then “check off” the Christmas presents that have actually been bought.  I also need a designated spot to “check off” which items on the Christmas gift list have been wrapped and which ones are hidden away somewhere in my bedroom closet!  Guess what?  I created an adorable printable Christmas list that will help to organize your holiday this year!

PRINTABLE CHRISTMAS GIFT LIST BACKSTORY

You see, years ago when money was VERY tight, this printable Christmas gift list was my lifeline to make sure that the first couple Christmas wish list ideas for each child were taken care of.  The hubs was in law enforcement and I worked full-time, but there was a whole lot more month than money, if you know what I mean. Christmas is such a special time of year for children, and having an organized Christmas list for my frugal Christmas gift shopping helped reduce my stress level by helping me keep track of the essentials I needed to ensure magical Christmas experiences for the kiddos.

Not only does this take a load of stress off of my holiday season, a Christmas gift list template keeps me from overspending.  Since I’m able to clearly see at at glance what has already been taken care of, I don’t run around buying unnecessary filler gifts like I did when I was first married.  You know what I mean… you don’t think you have enough for Aunt Sally, so you buy one more little whatnot.

A master Christmas gift lift is really my best friend as the holiday starts to get insanely busy and I need a true gift tracker.  With super busy days, I would purchase gifts sporadically and then forget what I bought.

OK, it has happened. Please tell me I’m not the only one!

PRINTABLE CHRISTMAS GIFT LIST NOTES

Here are a few answers to questions asked about my gift list.  Inevitably, I always have questions when there is a printable product, even when it’s a freebie.

Can I print the Christmas gift list in black and white or color?

This printable can be printed in color or black and white or grayscale just like any other printable product.  I prefer to print mine in color when possible because it is very festive that way.  However, if you are out of colored ink, the list looks lovely as a black and white version as well.

What if my list is longer than this printable?

With everyone in our extended family now, one page of this Christmas gift list template is never enough to fill in all the people and gifts.  I simply print another sheet and staple it to the top sheet.  I also use the back of the printable list to create a wish list for the kiddos before deciding exactly what to buy.

If I want to print another sheet later, how will I find it on the blog?

When you receive this free printable, you will have lifetime access to the secret vault of family travel and cozy home printables at any time.  You’ll also receive an email update from me now and then.  The secret vault to this long list of printables in on  password-protected page on this blog.  You will receive the password in your email and can use that to access our secret place from now to forever.

How To Prepare For Thanksgiving: 4 Last Minute Tips To Keep Your Sanity

It’s almost Turkey Day and you haven’t done a thing to prepare for Thanksgiving?! Whatever you do, don’t panic!  Even though my crowd will be smaller this year, I still have lots to do and I’m feeling a little behind myself… the house, Thanksgiving meal prep, Thanksgiving decorations!  BUT, we’re guru girls and all it takes is a little more coffee, some inspo, and a whole lot o’ Jesus. Amen? I mean, this is Thanksgiving Day – so here are 4 quick tips to prepare for Thanksgiving in a jiffy without losing your noggin.

4 Last minute tips to prepare for Thanksgiving

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve written a couple articles lately about how to prepare for Thanksgiving [How to Make Your Home Cozy for Fall & an Easy Thanksgiving Menu] and it always sneaks up on me too.  You see, the weekend before Thanksgiving is my birthday weekend and it’s a new tradition to head to Athens.  So, we’ve just returned from that trip and I need to get my rear in gear as well.

Here’s what we can do right now to enjoy a fun, stress free Thanksgiving Day.

PREPARE FOR THANKSGIVING WITH PICKUPS

All your friends are using the Walmart grocery pickup and/or Kroger’s Clicklist.  Both are free grocery pickups that will deliver your groceries right to your car and you don’t even have to get out.  This eases my stress levels by volumes when I can order and pay online and not have to spend an hour or two inside the grocery store!

PREPARE BY ENLISTING THE FAM

If you are hosting guests for Thanksgiving, decide what the “have tos” are as far as house cleaning goes.  If your house is a disaster, focus on the rooms that are most important to be presentable.  Let go of perfection and do what you can.  Enlist family members with specific tasks if possible, and set a timer to have fun seeing who can complete their chores quickest – emphasis is on having fun.

PREPARE FOR THANKSGIVING WITH MAKE AHEAD DISHES

Whether you are in charge of taking one dish to Grandma’s house or hosting a houseful, decide what you can make ahead today to make last minute touches easier.  For instance, if you are in charge of pies, make them the day ahead.

PREPARE THE TABLES NOW

If you are hosting the meal, as long as cleaning is done, it’s never too early to set the table.  I find that getting the table set ahead of time motivates me to keep going with the beautiful fall colors!  If you have kids attending, be sure to set up their table ahead of time too, equipped with Thanksgiving printables, crayons, and games where applicable.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips And Ideas: How To Travel Best This Turkey Week

If Thanksgiving travel is in your near future, then you don’t need my Thanksgiving menu and Printables. Instead, you need Thanksgiving travel tips to get you to your out of town gathering or Thanksgiving travel ideas to get away from it all.  Whether carrying your famous pecan pie cross country or finding a hideaway resort, I’ve got some Thanksgiving travel hacks for you!

close up of Thanksgiving travel road

Thanksgiving Travel Tips

We’re obsessed with enjoying family travel to the fullest, so I hope you find these Thanksgiving travel tips very useful:

Take the scenic route

The best advice I can give when traveling for Thanksgiving festivities with those you love… stay put until the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  The day after Thanksgiving is second in line to the busiest ever and the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be pretty crazy also.  It’s pretty easy to find an alternative route rather than driving the interstate like every one else.  Although the hubs isn’t a fan like I am, I call these the “scenic routes” and I find them so much more interesting anyway.

Ship ahead

No you can’t put your kiddos in a box, but you can ship ahead many things that need to go to Grandma’s house that would be too cumbersome to travel with.  Simply weigh out the pros and cons for items that may be easier to get there before you do (especially for Thanksgiving travel by plane or train)!

Pack by outfit

There’s nothing more frustrating than searching for specific items in a neatly packed suitcase once you make it to your Thanksgiving destination.  When planning your Thanksgiving trip, separate your outfits by ziploc bags or by rolling the outfits up together.  Better yet, use compression travel cubes to keep each days essentials separate and in the smallest area possible.

Thanksgiving Travel Ideas

If your Thanksgiving travel plans include a Thanksgiving week or weekend getaway instead of the traditional turkey day, here are a few ideas.  These trip ideas would be lovely any time of the year, but why not when the weather is at its best!

Secluded cabin in the woods

I don’t know about you, but relaxing in a hidden cabin along the Appalachian Mountains during the glorious fall season is a dream on repeat around here.  The best mountain cabins in my opinion would fall somewhere between Dahlonega Georgia, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Cades Cove, Tennessee.  Yes, you can’t get any more “Hallmark movie” vibes than these cozy little mountain towns.

Don’t miss the adorably interesting town of Sautee, Georgia, near Dahlonega, and Ashville, North Carolina, near Hendersonville – if you choose to leave your cabin in the woods!

STAY IN CABIN IN CADES COVE VISTA LODGE

Create an outdoor adventure

If you’d rather get out and about outdoors, stay near the Great Smoky National Park, add the REI National Parks app to your phone and plan your visit for a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure.  The app will give you data on the different hiking trails and alert you to important info, natural features, and directions to get there!

NEARBY THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Secluded beach resort

You love the best weekend getaways in the mountains, but sometimes only the beach will heal what ails your busy heart! Here are a secluded beach ideas that will make you think you’re lounging on a tropical island without ever using your passport:

Last minute travel to the barrier isle of St. Simons Island, Georgia is just fine because this laid back beach town has been a favorite of the rich and famous since the 1800s.  Full of historic charm, there are more things to do on St Simons Island for families than there are hours in the day.  Many golf pros on the PGA tour call this quaint island home and it’s a perfect idea for secluded luxury!

Oh, the things to do in Islamorada Florida Keys will have you booking your trip before you can finish this paragraph.  Our family felt completely hidden away from the rest of the world’s cares when we visited recently.  It was our absolute favorite stop on our Florida Beaches tour!

Pound Cake Recipe: Easiest & Moistest Pound Cake You’ve Ever Had!

I thought yummy pound cakes like my Grandma made were too hard to bake. Not this one, honey.  This easy and moist pound cake recipe also has a browned, crunchy top and will have you at “hero status” in your home once again.  Whether you are baking this classic, southern dessert for spring desserts, Easter cake, Thanksgiving menu, Christmas desserts, or on just a plain old Wednesday, the recipients will love you for it!

close up of pound cake recipe with coffee

I remember fondly the childhood moments spent in my Grammy’s kitchen watching her bake the best pound cake recipe in her Bundt pan.  I was so excited when I grew up and got a Bundt pan of my own.  I’d love for my kids and Grandkids (of the future) to remember how much I enjoyed baking easy recipes in the kitchen for them.

MY POUND CAKE RECIPE BACKSTORY

When I started baking pound cakes on my own and tried to duplicate my Grandmother, however, I found out that some pound cake recipes are difficult.  Some recipes have turned out too dense, too dry, or too crumbly.  I’m not one to give up, though, so as always, I got into my test kitchen to experiment.  The results finally paid off.  I’ve created easy pound cake recipe that’s scrumptious as can be!

EASY POUND CAKE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

All the exact measurements for my easy pound cake recipe are on the printable recipe card below, but here are the ingredients at a glance.

  • sugar
  • Crisco shortening
  • all purpose flour
  • eggs
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • milk
  • vanilla (or other) flavoring

EASY POUND CAKE RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

There’s an easy pound cake recipe printable recipe card below, but here’s the basic idea –>

You’ll find a printable recipe card below, but this pound cake recipe is pretty simple.  Several common ingredients are added to the mixer, the batter is poured into the bundt pan, and then you can forget about it for an hour.  Easy peasy.

If you want to get into specifics: sugar and Crisco are mixed until fluffy, then eggs are added to the mixer one at a time.  The rest of ingredients are added and mixed.  Bake for one hour. Wondering how to get a fluffy cake every single time?

close up of bundt pan pound cake recipeIf you haven’t bought yourself a bundt cake pan yet, don’t worry, my favorite is super cheap right now…

BEST POUND CAKE RECIPE TIPS

These tips will work for this pound cake recipe and every other cake you choose to bake:

  • Allow eggs to become room temperature before adding to the recipe
  • Don’t allow the pan to touch the oven glass of the door while cooking
  • If the cake is almost done but a little “jiggly” in the center, turn oven off and let cake stay in the oven for five minutes
  • Be sure to let cool completely before removing cake from pan

Here’s your printable pound cake recipe card:

Easy & Moist Pound Cake Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 C sugar
  • 1 C Crisco shortening
  • 3 C AP flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 C milk
  • 2 tsp of favorite flavorings
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a bundt pan.
  3. Cream sugar and Crisco in large bowl.
  4. Add eggs one at a time into mixing bowl.
  5. Slowly pour in flour, baking powder, salt, and milk.
  6. Mix until blended but not too much.
  7. Add two teaspoons of flavoring of choice (vanilla, lemon, etc).
  8. Place in oven and bake for one hour. If jiggly in center after one hour. Turn off heat and leave cake in oven for extra five minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool completely before removing from pan.

EASY POUND CAKE RECIPE TIPS

This pound cake recipe truly is amazing on its own but there are two things you can do to make it over-the-top incredible:  add a cinnamon swirl in the mix and a drippy glaze on top.

Add 1 Tablespoon cinnamon, 1 Tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon softened butter together and swirl through the top layer of the above recipe for a gorgeous swirl.  To make the glaze icing, simply add a little water, milk, or lemon juice to 1 cup of powdered sugar until it’s the consistency of pancake mix.  Pour it in thin lines around the cooled cake.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy this super simple cake for spring, Easter, holidays, or any occasion. You are welcome!

Let me know in the comments if you have fond memories of a special pound cake recipe too!

How To Cook Green Beans In 12 Minutes & Perfectly Every Single Time

Tired of not knowing how to cook green beans – because they’re tasteless, soggy, or too crunchy – and they take forever to cook?!  You’re about to learn how to rock this yummy Southern green beans recipe like a boss and be done in minutes. I struggled for years to know how to cook green beans that actually had incredible flavor and were just the right amount of crunchiness, while remaining in the healthy vegetable category. There are just a couple secrets to learn and you’ll be on your way to healthy green bean recipes on your own (that don’t necessarily taste healthy!). This just may be your family’s new favorite vegetable dish of the future!

close up of how to cook green beans - in red mug

If you’ve been around THTG at all, you know I adore sharing easy recipes, stress free travel tips, and cleaning, cozying, and family-friendly entertainment hacks.  Enjoy a solution to this age-old struggle of having your family actually like the green beans on their plate!

HOW TO COOK GREEN BEANS SECRETS

Knowing how to cook green beans (frozen green bean recipes) in the quickest and easiest way is simply knowing how to “saute” green beans. The following sauteed green bean recipe secrets include three key things (especially when cooking frozen green beans):

  1. infusing flavor early
  2. using the correct cooking oil
  3. using the right temperature at right time

#1 infusing flavor early ~ It’s imperative that you add the oil and seasoning early on into the green beans so that they will soak up the flavor.  This is accomplished by only adding the green beans into the skillet after the oil/butter/garlic is hot and then seasoning immediately.

#2 using the correct oil/butter ~ In order to give green beans the most flavor, use a combination of one of the following three oils with a pat of butter.  Choose from bacon grease (best flavor), olive oil, or coconut oil and combine with a small pat of butter before seasoning.

#3 using the right temperature at the right time ~After melting the oil/butter mixture, heat skillet to medium/high.  You’ll saute’ garlic and then green beans at this higher temperature before turning to low.  It helps to give a result of a crispier but done green bean and not a soggy, tasteless one.  More specific cooking instructions below.

HOW TO COOK GREEN BEANS INSTRUCTIONS

The ingredients and instructions for a printable recipe card on how to make frozen green beans taste good are below but here’s the basic idea:

After melting a couple tablespoons of bacon grease (or coconut oil or olive oil), cook garlic (can be garlic in a jar) for a couple minutes before adding green beans. Don’t gasp too loudly about me suggesting bacon grease!  The key to amazing green beans is infusing them with flavor early on.  The facts:  bacon grease gives vegetables flavor that nothing else can. Otherwise, they might taste like a limp dish rag hanging on the towel rack!

Don’t worry – I won’t force you, though.  I’ve listed the other options.

Just like 95% of my recipes, how to cook green beans the best is in a cast iron skillet.  It’s not mandatory to use a cast iron skillet but it sure does seem to help. Don’t have a cast iron yet? My most used piece is this old-school, heavy duty Lodge Cast-Iron Skillet.

Using fresh green beans is wonderful, but for this quick hack, we’re using frozen green beans (using the healthiest canned green beans would work too without the liquid but probably not as nutrient-dense).

The bags of frozen vegetables I always mention when I share about how to save money on groceries applies here too.  The Kroger green beans are blanched slightly (that means they are partially cooked) without any flavoring, only take a few minutes to cook, and are usually the best bargain for me.  When I need them, they’re in the freezer waiting for us.

Important:  When using frozen green beans, make sure you thaw and towel blot as much water as possible before cooking – you don’t want that extra water in your pan – that will cause sogginess.

HOW TO COOK GREEN BEANS INGREDIENTS

All the exact measurements are on the printable recipe card below, but here are the ingredients at a glance. ->>>

Melt bacon grease (or butter, coconut oil, or olive oil) in the center of a cast iron skillet. Meanwhile, cut up one piece of fresh garlic (you can totally use garlic in a jar instead).  Optionally, chopping and cooking 1/8 of an onion as well will amp up the flavor also.  Cook in grease for 2 minutes.  Add green beans that have thawed, along with salt and pepper seasoning.  Toss to coat beans until thoroughly coated.  Cook at medium heat for 5 minutes  Turn the burner on low heat, cover with a lid, and cook for 5 more minutes.

  • bacon grease, olive oil, or coconut oil
  • butter
  • fresh garlic (chopped)
  • chopped fresh onion (optional)
  • salt & pepper

That’s all folks!

HOW TO COOK GREEN BEANS RECIPE CARD

Here’s your printable recipe cards of how to cook green beans:

How To Cook Green Beans Like A Boss! (31 Days of Delicious Easy Recipes Day 25)

Ingredients
  • 2 Tablespoons bacon grease, olive oil, or coconut oil
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 bag frozen green beans, thawed & patted dry
  • 1 clove garlic or 1 tablespoon jarred garlic without juice
  • optional: 1/8 chopped onion
  • dash of salt
  • dash of pepper
Instructions
  1. Melt oil and butter in the center of a cast iron skillet.
  2. Meanwhile, cut up one piece of fresh garlic.
  3. Optional: chop and cook 1/8 of an onion.
  4. Add garlic and onion and cook in grease 2 minutes.
  5. Add green beans and salt and pepper seasoning and toss to coat beans until thoroughly coated..
  6. Cook at medium/high heat for 5 minutes
  7. Turn burner to lowest heat, cover with a lid, and cook for 5 more minutes.
  8. Easy Peasy!

BONUS WAYS TO COOK GREEN BEANS

Although not my favorite ways, there are other options:

How to boil green beans (basically -> how to cook frozen green beans)

You can pour frozen or canned green beans into a boiling pot of rich broth with seasonings and cook for ten minutes on medium.  Turn down to low and cook for five to ten minutes more until done.  Trust me when I say that this is the best of frozen green bean recipes.

How to cook green beans in oven

You can pour thawed-out and towel-patted green beans on a cookie sheet, coated with butter, seasonings, and Parmesan cheese to broil for 10 minutes to fifteen minutes until done and slightly browned at 400 degrees.

How to cook frozen green beans so they are not soggy

Most of the time when frozen green beans are soggy, it’s because the melted ice from the packaging is adding into the skillet and is too much liquid, or the beans are placed into oil in the skillet that isn’t hot. For best practices, thaw green beans and strain extra water out before cooking, and wait until oil in skillet is hot before adding beans.

But let me say that the first way I’ve shared is the most flavorful way I know how to cook green beans, not to mentioned the quickest and easiest.

www.FlirtyAprons.com
This is one of those dishes I call no-brainers or emergency meals.  I hope you enjoy this simple hack to get some vegetables on the table that are not only healthy but that also have tons of flavor (which is typically hard to give to vegetables like this).
